Programs in Game Development

The University of Skövde offers five bachelor and two master programs in computer game development.

All the bachelor programs are academic courses at bachelor level that mix theory with practically oriented elements. Managing software and methods for computer game development are therefore combined with the study of computer games and their forms of expression within each specific area.

The Design program is based on breadth in computer game development focusing on games mechanics and gameplay. Since the role of the designer may differ in different types of game development projects, students also study the basics of dramaturgy, software development and cognitive science.

Digital Narration: Game and Cultural Heritage

The digital world is evolving rapidly. In an age where the consumer is in control, it becomes increasingly important to think of new ways to articulate narrative and convey ideas. During the master’s program (one year) Digital Narration: Game and Cultural Heritage, you will learn how to create narratives and understand how the stories integrate with computer games and new digital media. After your studies, you will have the ability to work within a dynamic and expanding field, or you can go on to further study at master’s and doctoral levels.

Serious Games

Computer games are used throughout our society. People play on the bus, at home and at work and we can see how computer games concern a number of areas in the society of today. Furthermore, we see an important industry emerging. The term “serious games” refers to games that engage the user, and contribute to the achievement of a defined purpose other than pure entertainment (whether or not the user is consciously aware of it). The additional purposes can, for example, be education, training, health care or marketing.
